Your participation required…please?

Friday, January 28th, 2011

It’s hard to think of spring + summer in the midst of the blizzard like conditions our country has been buried in for the past month, but trust us, we’ll eventually see warm weather again.

Here at F&F we’ve been hard at work planning our spring and early summer collection for you, and as we make our apparel choices we want your feedback.
What do you most look forward to wearing come spring? What do you stock your wardrobe with?

Take a look at the poll and let us know…maybe you’ll see your choice!

Art in different forms; Man About Town w/ Kilian Martin

Wednesday, January 19th, 2011

Don’t kid yourself; this is art, and the guys styling is awesome.

I did a little skateboarding back in my day, with the emphasis being on “a little”. Success for me was staying on the board when the front wheels hit a small rock. That’s what makes this video so feaking cool. I saw about 18 times where I would have fractured an ankle, and at least one where my life would have ceased (the handstand). Great stuff.

Some Classics

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

I’ve been doing some “research” for our upcoming spring/summer rock-themed line (yes, more on that later) and have been coming across some classic t-shirts that always seem to pop up in searches like this.
I think it’s safe to say these will forever be iconic images in the music world;

ACDC Back in Black

the famous 1977 "Swansong" final tour t-shirt

The famous Dark side of the Moon album artwork

ah yes, the easily identified "steal your face" grateful dead skull

oh Jim, how we miss you (not as much as the makers of Jack Daniels, but we miss you)

There are a ton more, but these are some of the greats. What do you think? What’s your fave? What did I miss?

The Ugg epidemic

Monday, December 6th, 2010

Yes, I’ve heard they are comfortable. I’ve heard they are warm. I’ve heard you love them. Please, take it easy already.

The women of our culture are falling victim to an epidemic (as depicted in the below video). Girls in malls everywhere seem to be under the assumption that Ugg boots can be paired with any, and I mean any outfit. It’s the go-to “I’m having a lazy un-showered stroll through the mall in my plaid PJ’s Saturday” outfit. You know the look. Baggy sweatpants, “pink” emblazoned across their rear, one pant leg half tucked into the boot and the other half rolled up (I’m pretty sure this used to be the inner-city, unspoken gang symbol for “I’m selling”).

What I’m getting at here, is it looks so sloppy and ridiculous. Watch the below PSA:

Uggs do have their place (i.e. really cold weather), but by and large there’s a good chance you’ve been abusing your sheep-lined footwear. Do us all a favor, and think twice.

Sincerely,
F&F

As we’ve wrapped up our summer vintage show schedule, many things hit our to-do list for the coming holiday season; prepping our spring 2011 line and photo shoot, re-stocking and retiring sold out designs, managing partnerships with various charitable initiatives, and pursuing new and unique ways to grow the Faith & Fortune brand through community involvement. This last task, is where you come in!

Faith & Fortune wants to hit the road, and the destination is your place!

Beginning in the coming months, we’d love you to consider hosting us (by “us” we mean founders Jim + Jay) in your home for an evening of fun. We negotiate a date and time, you set the guest list, and we’ll take care of the rest! Here’s what you and your guests can expect:

Friday Fashion round up; what we like (Jasons Picks)

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

As part of a new weekly feature, we’re going to bring you some our favorite fashion items out there, how we are pairing them with our favorite threads here at F&F, and how to look good in the colder whether. We may not be able to control the temps, but there is plenty to work with out there. Today, we’re going to work on you, guys. Let’s face it, we need it the most.

The Denim;

Every guy needs to have one or two quality pairs of jeans.  This needn’t mean you spend hundreds of dollars (in spite of what True Religion or J. Brand tells you), but it does mean you need to choose strategically. This means considering your body type, and the style of denim. Right now Gap is putting out some great styles, and specifically, their Selvage denim rocks.  This is about as raw and basic a starting point you can get. This means you will be the one to add the character and style to your denim, based upon how you wear it. There’s nothing wrong with jeans that already have fading and whiskered alterations, but there is something cool about creating your own personality. To some this sounds ridiculous, saying “we’re talking about jeans here”. But those of you who know how great a good pair of jeans is, know what I’m talking about.

The Shoes;

The above picture, as luck would have it, has the shoes I love right now (they aren’t new, just new to me!).  The Desert boot or Chukka is a timeless, incredibly multidimensional addition to your footwear collection. Clarks is really the originator/owner of this style, but Steve Madden, Cole Haan and others have perfected the look as well. Below are a couple of styles that you can’t go wrong with, either for a casual or more formal look. Suede or Waxed; what’s your preference?

The Shirt;

It’s easy for me to suggest any one of our products, simply out of self promotion. For that reason, I would say “don’t just take my word for it”.  I obviously believe in our designs, but either way you would find me layering our newest, softest Sovereign tee in a myriad of ways. This tee is cool b/c a) the history of the design behind it b) it’s a white tee, so it’s versatile c) the material feels like angel hugs (or how I’d imagine them to feel, were they to feel like anything at all). Pair it with an unbuttoned flannel, a cardigan, or all alone.

The great thing about fashion is you can combine these things and alter the look in about a million ways.  The bottom line is you can make the look your own. Having said that, above are some staples that can work in any individuals wardrobe and provide use for several seasons, if not more.

Do you own any of these? Thoughts?

Portsmouth NH, a photo shoot, and a new look; here we go

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

This past weekend we ventured North of Boston to what I think may be one of my new favorite places, Portsmouth NH. A coastal town with a very hip shopping and restaurant scene, we were inundated with amazing backdrops and a diversity of colors, textures, and very accommodating weather. The particular choice of location for this shoot came at the suggestion of our photographer, and we’re glad we listened.

One of the challenges for new brands, especially in the fashion industry, is bringing authenticity and consistency to your brand while seeking some degree of originality. While choosing a semi-urban setting in a trendy town is far from a new idea, we felt Portsmouth allowed us to most accurately represent Faith & Fortune and be ourselves. Our last shoot in fall of ’09 was awesome and much larger in scope with so many more moving parts. Everyone involved was incredibly talented and creative. Having said that, this most recent shoot will present some images and feelings that are more “us”. We’re not overly serious. We’re not pretending to be something we’re not.

We’re very proud of our first shoot…no regrets. Having said that, we had a blast at the last shoot and are VERY excited for our web “refreshing”.

The new look will coincide with some new fall pieces that we hope you’ll love and will get you excited as we move ahead. I know we can’t wait.

Keep doing good!

…a lifestyle and measurable action steps…

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

life·style A way of life or style of living that reflects the attitudes and values of a person or group
ac·tion Something done or accomplished; a deed

You my have noticed at the footer of each page on faithfortune.com the statement “More than just an apparel line, Faith & Fortune is a brand that requests a lifestyle and measurable action steps of its community members”.

Think for a moment about those two words, “lifestyle” and “action”. What do they say to you? Do they move you? Do you feel motivated towards responsibility? Do they make you think? Meant to be more than a “tag line” or a trendy statement, those words have been chosen very intentionally in an effort to communicate to you the beyond passive existence we are responsible for. Beyond providing cool and wearable art to those we come in contact with, a primary motivator for us here at Faith & Fortune is to move you in creative ways and provide opportunities for “stepping outside yourself”.

Toms Shoes has been a tremendous inspiration for social change

Toms Shoes, providing footwear for kids all over the globe, has been a tremendous inspiration for social change

Personally, I can say that there have been a couple of primary road blocks in the past that have kept me from “doing for others”. More often than not it has been “analysis paralysis” (so many organizations needing so much help, where do I start and how could I possibly make a differenece with so much need out there), or fear (what do I do? Where do I help? What if I say something wrong? What if I don’t have anything to offer? etc). But, once you have made that first leap to get involved in some way you then realize how unfounded and ridiculous those barriers truly are. Do you need any more evidence than the look on the child’s face in the picture above? Does it look like she cares about the background or talent level of the volunteer? I can tell you without at doubt that no, she doesn’t. Simply by putting forth a small gesture of sacrifice and goodwill we can positively influence others in profound ways. That, my friend, is the challenge we call you to.

In the coming weeks and months we will begin to share with you the opportunities that we hope you will join us in (whether you are physically with us or taking part in your own community). It is the effort of “walking the talk” and providing the opportunity. Removing the excuse in an effort to grow ourselves and our community. Don’t be overwhelmed by this challenge, as we will be starting small and in ways that you can EASILY duplicate and join us. In fact, we hope that you too will challenge us and offer your stories and experiences as we take these steps together. Little by little. Remember…Rome wasn’t built in a night!
