F&F winter 2011 photo campaign

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

Sigh. THAT was a lot of work.

While we’ve certainly had more moving parts and potentially hazardous issues in past shoots, for whatever reason this one seemed to take forever to get here. Maybe it was the 5 reschedules we put our photographer through. Perhaps it was the last-minute apparel adjustments. Maybe, just maybe, it was the models dropping out last minute due to schedule conflicts.

All those things aside, this shoot was a rousing success that truly showcased the talents of the team involved. From the photographer, to the stylist, to the first-time models (we’ll leave it a mystery for you to solve which ones) we couldn’t be happier.

This shoot was a little different in that we wanted to show our fans and new followers some ideas as to how we see F&F fitting into your wardrobe. While we think the options are many, the idea is to help you visualize how F&F might naturally transition into your closet. Many of the piece have stand-alone potential, but also play well with others. See some of the early preview images below, with most to come next week.

Enjoy!

Spring & Summer sneak peak

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

Yes, it’s getting to be that time of year where we’re dreaming of wonderful things. Beaches, flip-flops, tans, and the clothing that goes along with these.

You know of what I speak. Dig deep within the snow-covered recesses of your memory. Push aside the flannel and wool that fills your minds-eye closet. They are called “t-shirts” and “pullovers” and “hoodies”.  Go ahead; sound it out, we won’t laugh.

This weather is right around the corner, closer than you may think or feel. That’s why we’ve been hard at work prepping some new, colorful, and exciting pieces. T-shirts, button downs, a cardigan, and some hoodies you won’t (but will have to) want to take off….ever. Here’s a sneak peak of what’s to come.

What do you think?

Part I of our interview with artist Ben MacAdam!

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

Our desire at Faith & Fortune is to dabble in the serious and the juvenile, the artistic and the entertaining, the day to day things that capture our attention, and the beauty in our world that makes us stop and ponder. When doing this, it’s essential that we involve those who are the creators and visionaries of these things. One such artist is Ben MacAdam, who was introduced to us through our current featured artist Grant Hanna. Below is part I of a two part series of an interview with Ben. We hope you enjoy!

1)Where do you currently work, and what do you do there?

I was born in Colchester England, but most of my youth was spent in historic Concord, Massachusetts. I moved back to this area with a new perspective of it as an adult. I’ve come to appreciate the landscape here with all its open fields, barns, and farms. As a kid I was mostly occupied with skateboarding so pavement was more appealing at the time. I see a large correlation between the landscapes I experience and the elements in the art I make. The solid grid-like urban scape and the soft countryside always have their voices of conversation in my work.

I worked at the design firm Bartlett Interactive in West Concord, and then began taking my freelance design a bit more seriously. I also wanted to spend more time painting. I now work part-time at Francesca Anderson Fine Art Gallery in Lexington, MA. Being surrounded by paintings, meeting experienced artists, critiquing art, is a healthy environment for me as a young artist. At the end of this year I will have the honor of curating a show, hopefully I can slip some of my work in! I’ve been selling pieces I’ve done in the past every now and then so whenever that happens I get pumped to keep painting. Also, I’ve just recently started working part-time as a junior designer at http://abovethefolddesign.com.

2)When did you know that the Arts were your “calling”?

In the act of drawing from still life and the human figure I discovered art was ‘my calling’. My professors played a large role in how I began to value art, to be interested in how light told stories, and be able to participate in the dialogue of art today. But to be more specific I remember a direct affirmation from my life drawing and painting professor Bruce Herman. During a personal critique at the end of one junior semester he said ‘Ben, Art is your vocation”. I thought to myself ‘perfect!’, and I wasn’t sarcastic to myself at all. To hear that from someone I so admired as an artist and person, I couldn’t help but let go of any doubts and continue the pursuit.

3)What kind of impact did studying art in school have on you?

I am thankful for how my teachers shared their personal world views with me, how it infused their work, and created a sacred atmosphere in the studio. As a student looking to worship Christ, I absorbed so much of what they expressed in their lectures and what they said about their own art. The result was that I was able to build myself up with a concrete base of how and why to make art. I thank them for that.

I also appreciate that studying art in school gave me the opportunity to explore different mediums. Having a broad understanding of the tools helped me realize that the idea had to come first and the idea would choose an appropriate medium, not vice versa. From a semester in New York City I was able to see this more and more in the galleries. And discussing with peer artists I could see my own work expanding outside of the traditional idea of painting being ‘a window’ and into a more interesting arena. One example was to use found surfaces, such as the ‘Graffiti’ series (using surfaces already covered in another person’s marks), which helped launch my work into creating dream-like abstractions of landscapes and even textures on their own.

To be continued….

Faith & Fortune Visits the Hope Lodge

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

For those of you who have been following us on our Facebook fan page or on our Twitter page, you know we had been recruiting volunteers for a visit to the Hope Lodge in Boston last week. Our plan was to host a simple ice cream night, just to give their residents a break. Well, they were incredibly thankful for the gesture, and so much so, we were left wondering why we hadn’t done it sooner!

For those of you not familiar with the Hope Lodge, it is a 40 suite, outpatient residence for those who live at least 40 miles away from the hospitals in which they are receiving cancer treatments. It provides an opportunity for some sense of normalcy and comfort while undergoing some very challenging times. They have done an amazing job of building a warm, comfortable, accommodating place.

They even have a theatre!

Faith & Fortune’s hope with volunteer opportunities like this, is to force ourselves and our community to step out of our comfortable daily routine. I’ll admit that it’s easier, and certainly more predictable to go about my daily schedule thinking only of myself. Having said that, those times that I do force myself into opportunities like this I end up realizing how much personal growth I gain. Additionally, it just become easier and easier.

Going forward, we’d love to have you involved in some way. Keep an eye our for different events that we will either be hosting or taking part in and don’t hesitate to drop us a message. Also, if you have a charity that you are regularly working with or would like to see Faith & Fortune get behind, let us know! If we can work it into our plans, we’ll do our best!

…a lifestyle and measurable action steps…

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

life·style A way of life or style of living that reflects the attitudes and values of a person or group
ac·tion Something done or accomplished; a deed

You my have noticed at the footer of each page on faithfortune.com the statement “More than just an apparel line, Faith & Fortune is a brand that requests a lifestyle and measurable action steps of its community members”.

Think for a moment about those two words, “lifestyle” and “action”. What do they say to you? Do they move you? Do you feel motivated towards responsibility? Do they make you think? Meant to be more than a “tag line” or a trendy statement, those words have been chosen very intentionally in an effort to communicate to you the beyond passive existence we are responsible for. Beyond providing cool and wearable art to those we come in contact with, a primary motivator for us here at Faith & Fortune is to move you in creative ways and provide opportunities for “stepping outside yourself”.

Toms Shoes has been a tremendous inspiration for social change

Toms Shoes, providing footwear for kids all over the globe, has been a tremendous inspiration for social change

Personally, I can say that there have been a couple of primary road blocks in the past that have kept me from “doing for others”. More often than not it has been “analysis paralysis” (so many organizations needing so much help, where do I start and how could I possibly make a differenece with so much need out there), or fear (what do I do? Where do I help? What if I say something wrong? What if I don’t have anything to offer? etc). But, once you have made that first leap to get involved in some way you then realize how unfounded and ridiculous those barriers truly are. Do you need any more evidence than the look on the child’s face in the picture above? Does it look like she cares about the background or talent level of the volunteer? I can tell you without at doubt that no, she doesn’t. Simply by putting forth a small gesture of sacrifice and goodwill we can positively influence others in profound ways. That, my friend, is the challenge we call you to.

In the coming weeks and months we will begin to share with you the opportunities that we hope you will join us in (whether you are physically with us or taking part in your own community). It is the effort of “walking the talk” and providing the opportunity. Removing the excuse in an effort to grow ourselves and our community. Don’t be overwhelmed by this challenge, as we will be starting small and in ways that you can EASILY duplicate and join us. In fact, we hope that you too will challenge us and offer your stories and experiences as we take these steps together. Little by little. Remember…Rome wasn’t built in a night!
