Kanye West; music + style master

Monday, January 9th, 2012

People can and will debate artists levels of creative genius and the methods by which they perpetrate their message. Kanye’s antics have certainly been scrutinized through the years, and rightly so. What is not up for debate, however, is the large impact he has had on both the music and fashion scene. Releasing hit after hit and sitting at the runways edge for high-profile fashion shows, Yeezy is a tastemaker that turns heads.

For today’s style set, we’ve thrown together a look that we think Kanye would rock, complete with a previously unreleased (but soon to be released) F&F vneck tee, “Guns a Blazin”. This look is a little more understated for someone who isn’t quite ready to rock that super-trendy piece. If you are in fact one of those bold individuals, swap out any one of these pieces for a brighter, more colorful version (i.e. blue sneakers, a red jacket, multi-color scarf, etc.).

Alright fellas, have fun with this. You can’t go wrong with a few fashion cues from Mr. West.

Friday Fashion round up; what we like (Jasons Picks)

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

As part of a new weekly feature, we’re going to bring you some our favorite fashion items out there, how we are pairing them with our favorite threads here at F&F, and how to look good in the colder whether. We may not be able to control the temps, but there is plenty to work with out there. Today, we’re going to work on you, guys. Let’s face it, we need it the most.

The Denim;

Every guy needs to have one or two quality pairs of jeans.  This needn’t mean you spend hundreds of dollars (in spite of what True Religion or J. Brand tells you), but it does mean you need to choose strategically. This means considering your body type, and the style of denim. Right now Gap is putting out some great styles, and specifically, their Selvage denim rocks.  This is about as raw and basic a starting point you can get. This means you will be the one to add the character and style to your denim, based upon how you wear it. There’s nothing wrong with jeans that already have fading and whiskered alterations, but there is something cool about creating your own personality. To some this sounds ridiculous, saying “we’re talking about jeans here”. But those of you who know how great a good pair of jeans is, know what I’m talking about.

The Shoes;

The above picture, as luck would have it, has the shoes I love right now (they aren’t new, just new to me!).  The Desert boot or Chukka is a timeless, incredibly multidimensional addition to your footwear collection. Clarks is really the originator/owner of this style, but Steve Madden, Cole Haan and others have perfected the look as well. Below are a couple of styles that you can’t go wrong with, either for a casual or more formal look. Suede or Waxed; what’s your preference?

The Shirt;

It’s easy for me to suggest any one of our products, simply out of self promotion. For that reason, I would say “don’t just take my word for it”.  I obviously believe in our designs, but either way you would find me layering our newest, softest Sovereign tee in a myriad of ways. This tee is cool b/c a) the history of the design behind it b) it’s a white tee, so it’s versatile c) the material feels like angel hugs (or how I’d imagine them to feel, were they to feel like anything at all). Pair it with an unbuttoned flannel, a cardigan, or all alone.

The great thing about fashion is you can combine these things and alter the look in about a million ways.  The bottom line is you can make the look your own. Having said that, above are some staples that can work in any individuals wardrobe and provide use for several seasons, if not more.

Do you own any of these? Thoughts?

Am I too old (read:too uptight) for a graphic t?

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

The short answer, is “no”. We can say with a fairly high level of confidence that if you’re packing your
kids off to college and your daughter’s roommate has the same tee…OK, time to move on.

Having said that, just because you may be out of college and are in the “I have to wear a suit to my 9-5 Mon-Fri” phase,
it doesn’t mean you need to kiss creativity and boldness goodbye for good, my friend. In fact, that’s why the weekend
was invented! (“For t-shirts?” you ask…no, for fun we say!). Whether paired with your favorite jeans and a scarf, or slightly hidden beneath a button up for that “no, I’m not going to let you see the whole design” look, it’s still one of the great ways to reveal your expressive side (side note: even if you don’t really have an expressive side, giving off the impression that you do can’t really hurt, right?).

You’ll notice in the F&F collection that our offerings range from bold to subtle, specifically for the reason that we want you to be able to represent that side of you that doesn’t make it out during the work week, but without looking like you sit ringside for ultimate fighting bouts or a reality TV reject. Which brings us nicely to example #1, of how not to rock the graphic tee:

Now, we’re glad to hear that Mr. Gosselin has sworn off his fashion disaster ways (see his self deprecating “funny or die” video), but nonetheless here serves as a wonderful example of what to never, ever, ever, wear. It’s not his style, it doesn’t fit his personality, and the built in undershirt just looks ridiculous.

This example of poor taste aside, there are some very tasteful and bold looks you can pull off with the appropriately timed graphic tee,which is exactly the sort of practice we promote! Take for example our good friend Ashton Kutcher (ignore the suspenders and celebrity wife for the moment…two things at this stage that you are surely convinced you could not pull off):

The always fashionable JT:
JT & Cameron may be a thing of the past, but his style carries on

JT & Cameron may be a thing of the past, but his style carries on

This look fits the personality of the wearer, incorporates both a graphic tee and a classic piece (the cardigan), and does not scream “look at me”.

So there you have it; one glaring example of how not to express your love for the graphic arts, and two more fashionable, prudent choices (in fact, Ashton and Justin are a couple of great examples of guys who push the fashion boundaries without going over the top, and may even serve as an inspiration for you). The bottom line though, is this: Whatever look you decide to go with, wear it with confidence….and own it. That’s a look, people will have to respect.

Disclaimer for the ladies: We hope you don’t feel ignored here. Truly, it’s the men who need the help. Let’s work together on this. More coming for you….
